Sunshine

We all know how I have a minor issue with S.A.D, well this year I just had to get away. A friend  and I went to Dominican Repluplic, Porto Plata. We chose that particular location because the prise was right. Stayed at a 4 star, nothing major to complain about. Although we may have had a bat in our roof, or perhaps a rat. Either way it woke me up at night. Not having to cook for seven days was perhaps the best part.

Did lots of walking on the beach. Our resort was in a bit of a compound, which was fine due to the fact I was walking alone. Only one day of rain. Would have not have minded more as I did only get out running twice, due to the heat and maybe the amount of liquor consumed.

On the compound, there were 15 original resorts, however only 9 were operational. This one was falling into disrepair but there were still quite a few security guards minding the place.

Booked an excursion on the beach with a no- named operator. Don't do that. Wanted to do a waterfall climbing adventure, but to get there had to ride this open air death machine on winding mountain roads and then to get home on roads where there are no traffic laws. Terrifying, and not a good choice. Kind of a wasted day.

I have tanning problems and thus spent the entire week being asked if I had just arrived and from the locals as 'white meat'. Joy. Next time I will pre tan.

How was the food?
Where were most of the guests from? Nice or obnoxious?
Would you go there again or pick somewhere different and what would your criteria be for another place?
Other than beaching and eating (and drinking), was there anything else to do? Watersports?

THe food was great. It was a little meat heavy, but I am a non picky mostly veggie and I managed well. Honestly the fresh fruit was the best part. We did the a la carts for dinners and was mildly disapointed. But all food was good. Really nothing to complain about.
I would pick someplace different as I like to try new things. BUT I would pick another resort in the same location as generally it is a little cheaper there for all inclusives vs. Puna Cana.
Mnay of the guests while we were there were from Quebec, also russia. However it changes on a weekly basis. When got there it felt like we were the only english speakers but it was changing. The staff seem to know spanish and french well- english being the third.
As for toher things to do, it is what you make it- there are local attractions to see, lots of excursions. There is nightly entirtainment and some activities through out the day, but this particular resort did not have alot of activities. As i will talk to anybody, half of my fun is meeting people. YOu could use kayaks from the resort but they were short and the water was rough while we were there.
In the future I would enquire about
- food
- amount of activities
- languages spoken
- How many venders on the beach.
- Who the beach is open to.I had friends who went to DR and there was begging on the beach from children. we did not have that as ours was in a tourist zone.
- Dancing after dark as I like to dance- even if I have no skill.
